Medical Acupuncture

What is Medical Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an integrative medical practice rooted in traditional Chinese/Eastern medicine, which involves insertion of fine needles, much thinner than immunization/vaccine needles, into specific “meridian points” on the body. This specific technique is designed to restore body’s flow of energy, known as “Qi,” through pathways (meridians) to alleviate pain, reduce stress, and promote overall health. Simply stated, this procedure instructs the body to Restore Balance, Promote Harmony, and Increase Energy. Modern medical acupuncture integrates these practices with evidence-based approaches, focusing on the stimulation of nerves, muscles and connective tissues to foster natural healing.

What is Qi?

Pronounced “chee;” you may see it spelled “Chi,” “Ki” or “Ji.” A simplified explanation is “energy flow” within the body that parallels our blood and lymphatic systems. However, it is much more than just “energy;” it is the vitality the body derives from its nourishment and circulates to all muscles, organs and tissues. Each of our organs produces its own special Qi that contributes to the overall vitality of the body.

It is like electricity: we see how it manifests and how to harness and direct its power, but it is hard to explain.

How is Acupuncture useful in medicine?

Oftentimes, one can feel “off” or have vague but disquieting symptoms such as “I just don’t feel right” that Western medicine cannot pinpoint, with patients receiving instructions from providers such as “keep an eye on it, come back if it starts again” or “we can’t find anything wrong with your labs or imaging, there’s nothing to treat so let’s monitor it.” Patients can often be frustrated and feel helpless since they are dismissed even though what they are experiencing is real! This often occurs when the flow of Qi is obstructed or unbalanced. A simple example is when you fall and hurt your knee, you get bruising, redness, and or pain at the knee, which is a form of Qi obstruction. This is where Medical Acupuncture comes into play. No, it is not a cure-all nor does it have a guaranteed effectiveness. The human body is an amazing supercomputer; Dr. William Lin sees Acupuncture as a keyboard and mouse, which is used to instruct your body, the supercomputer, to heal itself.
